5 New Darwin Wasps Species

Researchers from the Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (ATREE) discovered five new species of Darwin wasps in India and Thailand, marking the first record of the Microleptinae subfamily in India. These parasitic wasps, belonging to the Ichneumonidae family, play an essential ecological role. The newly identified species—Microleptes chiani, M. gowrishankari, M. sandeshkaduri, M. tehriensis (from India), and M. depressus (from Thailand)—highlight the region’s biodiversity. This discovery underscores the importance of taxonomic research in understanding ecological dynamics and fostering conservation.
