- The Geological Survey of India (GSI) is India’s official organization for the survey and exploration of mineral resources.
- It was established in 1851 by the British Government and is now an agency of the Government of India under the Ministry of Mines.
- It is headquartered in Kolkata, West Bengal and has its regional offices in different parts of the country.
- GSI is responsible for the systematic geological survey of India and its exclusive economic zone, as well as for the exploration and assessment of mineral and water resources.
- GSI also conducts research and development activities in the field of geosciences.
- It provides services in geoscience-related areas such as geophysical exploration, geotechnical investigations, geochemical investigations and remote sensing.
- It also provides training to personnel from various government and private organizations in the fields of geology, geophysics and remote sensing.
- GSI is involved in scientific research in various areas such as tectonics, seismology, volcanology, mineralogy and seismotectonics.
- It also provides consultancy services for mineral exploration and environmental impact assessments.
- GSI is the custodian of the national geological archives and the repository of the national geoscience database.
