State of Africa’s Environment 2024

Sub-Saharan Africa faces severe challenges due to unsafe water and poor sanitation, leading to widespread diseases and economic losses. With over 50 deaths per 100,000 people linked to unsafe water and 40% of WASH-related deaths occurring in just 10 African countries, the crisis is urgent. Inadequate sanitation affects children most, causing 254,000 deaths under five in 2021 and contributing to stunted growth. The economic impact is significant, reducing GDP by up to 6%. Open defecation remains a major issue, with 196 million people practicing it. Addressing these problems requires international support, improved infrastructure, and better public health education.
