India’s First CO2-to-Methanol Pilot Plant

India’s first CO2-to-methanol pilot plant, located in Pune at Thermax Limited, focuses on Carbon Capture and Utilisation (CCU) technology, converting 1.4 tonnes of CO2 per day into methanol. This project is a collaborative initiative between IIT Delhi and Thermax Limited, supported by the Department of Science and Technology under a Public-Private Partnership. Costing ₹31 crore, the plant aligns with India’s Panchamrit climate goals to reduce carbon emissions, as outlined at COP 26. It represents India’s efforts in combating climate change, though challenges like scaling the technology and ensuring cost-effectiveness remain.
