Indian Railways Electrification and Green Initiatives
Indian Railways has electrified 97% of its Broad Gauge network, targeting 100% electrification for sustainable transportation. Since 2014-15, 45,200 km of tracks have been electrified, with the rate increasing to 19.7 km/day in 2023-24. Electrification supports environmental goals by reducing carbon emissions and operating costs by 70%. Supported by robust power systems, the Green Railways Initiative aims for zero emissions. The Northeast Frontier Railway is pivotal in this mission, focusing on completing electrification. These efforts align with India’s goal to lead in sustainable railway practices globally.
