Lok Sabha Ethics Committee
The Lok Sabha Ethics Committee oversees the ethical conduct of its members and examines complaints of misconduct. Established in 2000 as an ad hoc body, it became permanent in 2015. Members are appointed annually by the Speaker. Its current chair is BJP MP Vinod Kumar Sonkar. Any Lok Sabha MP or individual (via an MP) can file complaints, provided they include evidence and an affidavit. Cases are examined with a prima facie inquiry before recommendations are submitted to the Speaker. The committee’s history traces back to a 1996 proposal for ethical oversight of legislators. Notable cases include the 2005 cash-for-query scandal.
