West Bengal Heritage Tourism Recognition
West Bengal has been recognised by UNESCO as a top destination for heritage tourism. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee highlighted the state’s focus on developing heritage and religious sites like Dakshineshwar, Kalighat, and the upcoming Jagannath Temple in Digha. Tourism has created thousands of jobs, with 65% of 2,489 homestays located in North Bengal. Infrastructure projects, such as a bridge over the Muriganga River, aim to boost accessibility to the annual Gangasagar Mela. The state’s efforts align with preserving cultural heritage, enhancing tourism, and generating employment opportunities.
