Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill – UK

The UK’s Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill permits terminally ill patients to seek assistance in ending their lives under strict conditions. Approved by the UK House of Commons with 330 votes, the bill faces further reviews before becoming law. Current UK laws prohibit assisted dying, with penalties of up to 14 years in prison. The bill’s safeguards include eligibility criteria, independent medical reviews, and High Court approval. Critics fear pressures on vulnerable groups, advocating better end-of-life care. In contrast, India allows “passive euthanasia,” permitting withdrawal of life support but not assisted dying.
