Trouessartia thalassina and Proterothrix sibillae Discovery
Romanian researchers, collaborating with Indian scientists, discovered two new feather mite species, Trouessartia thalassina and Proterothrix sibillae, in Meghalaya’s subtropical Kharang forests. These mites, found on Verditer Flycatcher and Small Niltava birds, highlight Meghalaya’s rich biodiversity and the ecological importance of its forests. Feather mites assist in cleaning feathers but can harm birds under stress. The study, funded partially by the Romanian Academy, underscores the significance of international cooperation in biodiversity research and conservation efforts.
