India’s Optimal Quantum Site

The Indian Astronomical Observatory (IAO) in Hanle, Ladakh, has been identified as India’s optimal site for satellite-based quantum communication, thanks to its low humidity, minimal atmospheric water vapor, and extremely cold temperatures, reducing signal distortion. Research by the Raman Research Institute (RRI) compared Hanle with Mount Abu and Nainital, finding Hanle to have the least signal loss (44 dB). This breakthrough supports Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) for secure data transmission via Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites. Hanle’s unique atmospheric conditions make it a global model for advancing quantum communication technologies.
