Moths Hear Plant Sounds
A study by 17 Israeli researchers reveals that moths can hear ultrasonic sounds emitted by stressed plants to decide egg-laying spots. The research, focusing on Egyptian cotton leafworm moths, showed that moths prefer quiet, healthy plants over stressed ones, ensuring better nourishment for larvae. Experiments using two tomato plants confirmed their ability to detect and respond to plant sounds. Ultrasonic clicks from stressed plants help insects assess health. These findings shed light on insect behavior and plant communication, suggesting sound and scent cues influence ecological interactions. Further research is needed to understand the integration of these signals.
