Mikheil Kavelashvili Elected President of Georgia

Mikheil Kavelashvili, a former footballer and ruling Georgian Dream party member, has been elected as Georgia’s president through a 300-member electoral college. He received overwhelming support with 224 out of 225 votes. This election comes amid political tensions, with opposition parties boycotting the process over allegations of election fraud. Recent constitutional amendments replaced direct presidential elections with an electoral college system. Outgoing President Salome Zourabichvili criticized the process as undemocratic. Kavelashvili’s presidency begins during debates over Georgia’s postponed European Union accession and concerns about political transparency and inclusivity.
