Scorpene Submarine Capability Enhancements

The Indian Ministry of Defence signed contracts worth ₹2,867 crore to enhance Scorpene-class submarine capabilities. One contract of ₹1,990 crore is for integrating DRDO-developed Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) modules, allowing submarines longer submerged operations. Another ₹877 crore contract involves integrating DRDO’s Electronic Heavyweight Torpedoes (EHWT) in collaboration with Naval Group, France. The AIP boosts stealth and endurance, while EHWT improves firepower using advanced aluminum silver oxide technology. The first AIP integration will occur on Kalvari in 2025, with completion expected by 2027-28. These developments aim to strengthen India’s naval defense and generate substantial employment.
