Abathsahayeshwarar Temple Wins UNESCO Award
The Abathsahayeshwarar Temple in Thukkatchi, Tamil Nadu, a 1,300-year-old Chola dynasty marvel, won UNESCO’s 2023 Award of Distinction for its restoration. Built by Kings Vikrama Chola and Kulothunga Chola, the temple features intricate architecture and houses numerous deities. Restoration efforts addressed structural damages, reinforced the prakarams, and rejuvenated gopurams with local craftsmen (sthapathis) using traditional methods. UNESCO commended the project for blending modern conservation with heritage preservation. Supported by the Tamil Nadu government’s ₹100 crore annual allocation for temple restoration, the award underscores the importance of conserving India’s cultural legacy.
