Alaknanda River’s Landslide Vulnerability

The Alaknanda River in Uttarakhand is highly prone to landslide-induced natural dams, as identified by a study from IIT Roorkee. These dams, often triggered by heavy rainfall, seismic activity, or deforestation, can cause devastating Landslide Lake Outburst Floods (LLOFs). Chamoli, Rudraprayag, and Uttarkashi districts are most affected, with Chamoli’s 1893 Gohna Tal incident being notably severe. Climate change and human activities have heightened landslide risks, particularly during monsoons. Researchers stress the need for advanced monitoring and disaster management strategies to mitigate future risks and protect vulnerable communities in the region.
