Recently Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled the world’s tallest statue (182 meters) of Sardar Vallabhai Patel in Gujarat. Although Sardar Patel’s valuable contribution towards Indian National Movement and Post-independence consolidation is commendable, building such a colossal statue with really huge investment (around Rs. 3000 crore) in just a few years raises serious political, economic and social concerns.
Kerala’s Sabarimala Temple issue is about the conflict between women rights and tradition. According to Kerala’s traditions and customs, women between 10 and 50 years of age were not permitted into Sabarimala Temple. However, the situation has changed when the constitutional bench of the Supreme Court on September 28, 2018, declared that restricting entry of women of menstruating age was unconstitutional.
