Challenges in Dolphin Conservation in India

Dolphin conservation in India faces challenges as the National Dolphin Research Centre (NDRC) in Patna, inaugurated in March 2024, remains inactive due to resource and staffing issues. The NDRC aims to protect the endangered Gangetic river dolphin, India’s national aquatic animal, which faces habitat loss due to environmental and human factors. Despite promises to operationalize the centre, delays impede critical research and conservation efforts. Moving forward, addressing these gaps and fostering collaboration are crucial to ensuring the survival of this unique species.
