China to Build World’s Largest Dam on Brahmaputra

China has approved the construction of the world’s largest dam on the Brahmaputra River in Tibet, near the Indian border, costing approximately $137 billion. This hydropower project, designed to generate 300 billion kWh annually, surpasses the Three Gorges Dam in scale. Situated in a seismically active Himalayan gorge, it poses significant engineering and environmental challenges. Concerns about its impact on water flow and regional stability have been raised by India and Bangladesh. The project’s scope includes tunnel drilling and safety measures to mitigate risks, with China emphasizing national security and revenue generation for Tibet.
