Decline in Sharks and Rays

Since 1970, shark and ray populations have declined by over 50% globally, with one-third of species now at risk of extinction. Key drivers include overfishing, habitat destruction, pollution, and climate change. Larger species like sawfish were the first affected, followed by rays and sharks, including hammerheads and requiem sharks. Recovery is possible through measures such as reducing overfishing, better fisheries management, and establishing marine protected areas. Successful conservation efforts have been noted in regions like Australia, Canada, and parts of Europe.
