Decline of Wading Birds in Southern India

A study in Kerala from 2010 to 2019 highlights alarming declines in wading bird populations, critical indicators of wetland health. Researchers analyzed 27 wetland sites, noting significant population decreases in species like the Great Egret and Indian Pond Heron. Environmental changes, including rising salinity, pH, and reduced organic nutrients, were linked to habitat degradation. Waders are adapting by foraging in agroecosystems, raising long-term viability concerns. Cultural landmarks and biodiversity are also at risk. Researchers advocate for wetland restoration, monitoring, and environmental management to reverse the trend and preserve these vital ecosystems.
