Delhi Land Reforms Act Controversy

The Delhi Land Reforms Act of 1954, specifically Sections 33 and 81, is under scrutiny due to claims by former CM Arvind Kejriwal accusing PM Modi of unfulfilled promises to repeal these sections. Section 33 prevents land fragmentation by restricting sales leaving owners with less than eight acres, while Section 81 mandates ejection of landowners misusing agricultural land. With Delhi’s increasing urbanisation, 308 out of 357 villages are declared urban, rendering parts of the Act redundant. Amid political debates, experts suggest reforming Section 81 to impose penalties instead of land forfeiture, highlighting a growing demand for flexible land use policies.
