Discovery of Indo-Burmese Pangolin

The Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) has identified a new pangolin species, Manis indoburmanica, diverged from the Chinese pangolin 3.4 million years ago. Found in the Indo-Burma biodiversity hotspot, this species resides in areas such as Arunachal Pradesh and Assam. The discovery, published in Mammalian Biology, highlights its genetic uniqueness and vulnerability due to poaching and habitat loss. Conservationists stress the need for targeted strategies. Pangolins, heavily trafficked for their keratin scales, play a critical ecological role. This finding deepens our understanding of pangolins and bolsters efforts to preserve these unique mammals and their ecosystems.
