Earth’s Tilt and Water Demand
A study in Geophysical Research Letters highlights the impact of excessive groundwater extraction on Earth’s tilt. From 1993 to 2010, Earth’s rotational pole shifted by 80 cm due to the extraction of 2,150 gigatons of groundwater, leading to a 0.24-inch rise in sea levels. This redistribution of mass affects polar motion and poses long-term climate risks. The study stresses sustainable groundwater management to mitigate these effects and protect climate stability, emphasizing global cooperation to maintain Earth’s balance.
