Goa Assembly ST Reservation Bill 2024
The Goa Assembly ST Reservation Bill 2024 empowers the Census Commissioner to ascertain Goa’s Scheduled Tribe (ST) population for Assembly seat readjustment. The Bill follows the inclusion of Kunbi, Gawda, and Velip communities in the ST list, raising the ST population from 566 (2001) to 149,275 (2011). Opposition raised concerns about the delayed 2021 Census, essential for accurate delimitation, and questioned the ₹1,000 crore budget against the ₹12,000 crore requirement. Calls for a nationwide Census and Caste Census were made to ensure equitable representation. The government reaffirmed its commitment to tribal welfare under PM Modi’s leadership.
