Goa Celebrates 63rd Liberation Day

Goa celebrated its 63rd Liberation Day on December 19, 2024, marking the end of 451 years of Portuguese colonial rule through Operation Vijay, a 36-hour military campaign in 1961. President Droupadi Murmu and Chief Minister Pramod Sawant paid tribute to freedom fighters like Mohan Ranade, who played a pivotal role in the liberation struggle. Liberation allowed Goa to preserve its unique cultural heritage within the Indian context. Commemorations included honoring freedom fighters’ families and reflecting on Goa’s resilience and vibrant cultural identity, shaped by its historical and colonial past.
