Great Indian Bustard Conservation Success

The recent sighting of twelve Great Indian Bustards (GIBs) in Rajasthan’s Desert National Park highlights significant progress in conservation efforts for this critically endangered species. With only 173 individuals remaining globally, 128 in the wild and 45 bred in captivity, Rajasthan’s initiatives have shown promise. Conservation measures include habitat restoration, fencing nesting areas, and a breeding program that recently achieved success with the artificial insemination of a GIB chick, “Arambh.” The Rs 12.90 crore project initiated in 2013 has played a pivotal role in this recovery. Sustained efforts in habitat protection, community involvement, and scientific research aim to secure the species’ future.
