Great Nicobar Island Development Project
The Great Nicobar Island Development Project has been approved, emphasising its importance for national security and regional development. The project underwent an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), involving institutions like ZSI, WII, and IISc. A panel reviewed and approved the plan with 42 conditions to safeguard biodiversity. Monitoring committees will oversee pollution, biodiversity, and welfare of indigenous communities like the Shompen and Nicobarese. A High-Power Committee (HPC) ensures compliance with the National Green Tribunal’s (NGT) directives, balancing development with ecological sustainability. This project is pivotal for sustainable growth while protecting the island’s unique ecosystem.
