IISc Develops Nanomaterial for Chromium Removal
Researchers at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) have developed a nanomaterial to clean chromium contamination in groundwater using iron nanoparticles. This on-site treatment method, enhanced with a carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) coating, prevents clumping and increases efficiency, converting toxic Cr6+ into a safer Cr3+ form. The improved S-CMC-nZVI nanomaterial removes 99% of chromium, even under different pH levels and competing conditions. This breakthrough offers a sustainable solution for treating polluted sites like Bengaluru’s Bellandur Lake and represents a significant step in addressing heavy metal contamination, with plans to scale up and test the technology on a larger scale.
