IIT Guwahati Biofuel Innovation

IIT Guwahati researchers have developed a biological method to produce biofuel by converting methane and carbon dioxide into bio-methanol, using the bacterium Methylosinus trichosporium. This innovative process mitigates greenhouse gas emissions, avoids toxic by-products, and is energy-efficient. Enhanced gas dissolution techniques improved methanol yield, which was tested as a diesel blend, reducing harmful emissions by up to 87%. The process leverages inexpensive resources, avoids competition with food production, and supports industrial applications like producing formaldehyde and acetic acid, enabling sustainability in the oil and gas industries.
