IIT Guwahati Researchers Explore African Swine Fever Virus Protein
Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati, led by Prof. Sachin Kumar, have made significant progress in understanding the biochemistry of the African Swine Fever Virus (ASFV), specifically focusing on the p30 protein. This protein plays a crucial role in virus attachment to host cells and defense evasion. Their research aims to develop effective control methods, including vaccines. ASFV is highly contagious among pigs and causes severe economic losses in pig farming, with no current vaccines available. The study, involving biochemical analysis and RNA degradation detection, highlights the importance of understanding viral mechanisms for creating disease control strategies and enhancing global biosecurity in the pork industry.
