India Mobilises Cyber Crime Volunteers Nationwide

The Union Ministry of Home Affairs, with state governments, has launched a Cyber Crime Volunteer Programme under the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), enrolling 54,833 volunteers. These volunteers assist in identifying unlawful content, promoting cyber hygiene, and supporting law enforcement. Critics, like the Internet Freedom Foundation (IFF), raise concerns about potential misuse and erosion of trust. The cyber crime portal handles 67,000 daily calls and identifies 1,500-2,000 fraudulent accounts. Partnerships with tech giants like Google and Facebook strengthen efforts against cyber threats. The programme also played a role in countering cyberattacks during the G-20 Conference in 2023.
