India Tags First-Ever Ganges River Dolphin

India has tagged a Ganges River Dolphin in Assam for the first time under Project Dolphin, a conservation effort initiated by the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change (MoEFCC). This collaborative project involves organizations like the Wildlife Institute of India, Aaranyak, and the Assam Forest Department, with funding from the National CAMPA Authority. Using advanced lightweight technology, tagging aims to study the dolphin’s migratory and behavioral patterns in fragmented river systems. The initiative underscores the ecological significance of the species, India’s National Aquatic Animal, and highlights India’s commitment to biodiversity conservation and evidence-based strategies.
