Indian Cities’ Air Quality Progress Report

From 2019 to 2024, Indian cities achieved a 27% average reduction in PM2.5 pollution, with National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) cities contributing a 24% decline. Varanasi led the progress with a 76% reduction, while cities like Moradabad, Kalaburagi, and Meerut also performed well. However, major cities such as Delhi, Gurugram, and Faridabad still experience severe pollution levels, with Byrnihat recording the highest PM2.5 levels at 127.3 µg/m³. NCAP, launched in 2019, initially targeted a 20-30% reduction by 2024, revised to 40% by 2026. Challenges persist due to limited monitoring infrastructure, industrial emissions, and stubble burning in northern states.
