Indian Courts Achieve Milestone in Case Disposals

Indian courts achieved a milestone by disposing of more cases than pending ones in 2024. District courts resolved over 13.4 million cases, leaving approximately 10.5 million pending, and the Supreme Court addressed 36,969 cases. The adoption of technology like e-filing, virtual hearings, and alternative dispute resolution methods, including the Mediation Act, 2023, contributed to this success. The eCourts project with a ₹7,210 crore allocation enhanced digital processes, further reducing pendency. The National Judicial Data Grid (NJDG) monitored progress, showing significant improvements in efficiency, as the case-to-pendency ratio dropped from 2.38 in 2023 to 0.79 in 2024.
