India’s First Bio-Bitumen Highway

India inaugurated its first bio-bitumen highway stretch on NH-44 in Mansar, Nagpur, Maharashtra, utilizing lignin-based bio-bitumen technology developed by Praj Industries, CSIR-CRRI, NHAI, and Oriental. Derived from lignin, a renewable resource found in plant cell walls, bio-bitumen is a sustainable alternative to traditional bitumen, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 70% and addressing India’s reliance on imported bitumen. The initiative aligns with Aatmanirbhar Bharat, promoting self-reliance and environmental sustainability. Concurrently, 400 projects for CNG production from biomass aim to further reduce pollution and empower farmers as energy providers, boosting economic and environmental benefits.
