India’s First Diabetes Biobank

India’s first Diabetes Biobank, established in Chennai, is a collaboration between the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the Madras Diabetes Research Foundation (MDRF). It aims to collect, process, and store biological samples for diabetes research, with a focus on Indian populations. The biobank houses samples from studies like ICMR-INDIAB and a young diabetes registry. It covers various types of diabetes, including Type 1, Type 2, and gestational diabetes. Launched after two years of groundwork, the biobank will facilitate research on genetic, lifestyle, and environmental factors affecting diabetes, improving treatment and prevention strategies in India.
