India’s Greenhouse Gas Emissions Decline

India’s greenhouse gas emissions decreased by 7.93% in 2020 compared to 2019, demonstrating efforts to decouple economic growth from carbon emissions. Total emissions reached 2,959 MtCO2e in 2020, with a 36% reduction in GDP emission intensity between 2005 and 2020. The country aims to reduce GDP emission intensity by 45% by 2030 and achieve 50% power generation capacity from non-fossil fuels. Major emission sources include energy (75.66%), agriculture (13.72%), and industrial processes. Initiatives like carbon sink development and adherence to Paris Agreement commitments showcase India’s commitment to sustainable growth.
