India’s Oilseed Production and GMO Adoption
The Solvent Extractors’ Association of India (SEA) advocates for the adoption of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) to boost oilseed production from 35 to 50 million tonnes by 2029-30. This would enhance vegetable oil availability, but rising demand for edible oils, projected at 28-32 million tonnes, remains a concern. Government initiatives like the National Oilseeds Mission aim to improve self-sufficiency. Challenges include low soybean prices, export declines in rapeseed meal, and oleochemical industry import competition. SEA urges lifting futures trading suspensions and providing export incentives to address these issues, ensuring sustainable growth in the sector.
