India’s Water Resources 2024
The Central Water Commission (CWC) released its “Assessment of Water Resources of India 2024,” estimating India’s annual water availability at 2,115.95 billion cubic meters (BCM). Major basins like Brahmaputra (592.32 BCM) and Ganga (581.75 BCM) lead in water availability, while basins like Sabarmati and Pennar have limited resources. Methodological enhancements increased this year’s estimate. However, India’s per capita water availability remains at a water-stress level of 1,513 cubic meters. Utilisable water resources remain limited, with only 690 BCM of surface water usable in 2019. The study stresses sustainable water management amidst challenges like urbanisation and climate change.
