Indo-US Nuclear Collaboration Challenges

The Indo-US nuclear collaboration faces hurdles due to regulatory constraints in both countries. The US Atomic Energy Act restricts the manufacturing of nuclear equipment in India, limiting India’s integration into the global nuclear supply chain. India’s Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Act, 2010, imposes liability on equipment suppliers, deterring foreign firms like GE-Hitachi and Westinghouse from investing. Amidst these barriers, the US-India Critical and Emerging Technology (iCET) initiative seeks to bolster cooperation in nuclear component manufacturing, focusing on Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). Collaborative efforts are crucial as India aims to bridge technological gaps and compete with China in the nuclear sector.
