Inland Waterways Development Council (IWDC)

The Inland Waterways Development Council (IWDC) aims to modernise India’s inland water transport through investments exceeding ₹50,000 crore over five years. Key initiatives include enhancing National Waterways (NWs), promoting green shipping with 1,000 eco-friendly vessels, and launching the National River Traffic and Navigation System (NRT&NS) for efficient vessel movement. The Riverine Community Development Scheme uplifts coastal communities, while Regional Centres of Excellence foster innovation. Legislative reforms under the National Waterways Act (2016) have increased cargo volume from 18 million tonnes in 2014 to 133 million tonnes in FY 2023-24. Future plans involve boosting cruise tourism and enhancing regional trade connectivity.
