Koneru Humpy: FIDE Women’s Rapid Champion

Koneru Humpy clinched her second FIDE Women’s World Rapid Chess Championship title in 2024 in New York, scoring 8.5 points in 11 rounds. She defeated Irene Sukander of Indonesia in the final, solidifying her status as the only Indian woman to win this championship twice. At 37, Humpy remains India’s top-ranked female chess player. Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated her, highlighting her role as an inspiration for future chess players. The men’s title was won by Russia’s Volodar Murzin, aged 18, becoming the second-youngest champion. Humpy’s victory is expected to boost chess enthusiasm and development in India.
