Maharashtra Prisons and Correctional Services Act, 2024

The Maharashtra Prisons and Correctional Services Act, 2024 aims to modernize the state’s prison system by replacing the colonial-era Prisons Act of 1894. It introduces specialized facilities like high-security and open prisons and focuses on rehabilitation rather than punishment. A new Director General of Prisons and Correctional Rehabilitation will oversee operations. Provisions address the needs of women and transgender inmates, and under-trial review committees will reduce overcrowding. The Act includes plans for multi-storey prisons and an Integrated Criminal Justice System using biometric monitoring. These reforms aim to balance inmate welfare with public safety, creating a modern correctional framework.
