Mankidia Community Granted Habitat Rights in Odisha Forests
The Mankidia community in Odisha has been granted habitat rights, making them the sixth Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group (PVTG) to receive this recognition under the Forest Rights Act, 2006. The Mankidia, a semi-nomadic group known for rope-making, depend on forest resources for their livelihood and culture. This legal recognition allows them access to their ancestral lands, ensuring their rights over forest areas. Odisha leads in granting habitat rights to PVTGs, having recognized six communities so far. Challenges like deforestation and dwindling population still pose risks to the Mankidia’s future, emphasizing the need for sustainable development.
