Michelle Bachelet Wins Indira Gandhi Prize

Michelle Bachelet, former President of Chile, received the 2024 Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament, and Development for her remarkable contributions to human rights and equality. The prize, established in 1986, honors efforts in promoting international peace and development. Bachelet’s presidency (2006–2010, 2014–2018) focused on reforms and strengthening India-Chile ties through a free trade agreement. She also served as the first UN Women director and UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. Her selection emphasizes her global advocacy for women, LGBTQ, and human rights, along with her role in enhancing India-Chile relations.
