Recent studies from Penn State highlight how microplastics, present globally from the Mariana Trench to Mount Everest, influence weather and climate by acting as ice-nucleating particles. Experiments showed that microplastics accelerate water droplet freezing in clouds, potentially altering precipitation patterns. While microplastics’ impacts on ecosystems and weather forecasting are concerning, further research is essential to understand their long-term environmental effects and integrate findings into climate strategies.
