National Anthem Controversy in Tamil Nadu Assembly

On January 6, 2025, Tamil Nadu’s Governor R.N. Ravi left the Legislative Assembly due to the absence of the national anthem before his customary address. The Raj Bhavan claimed this act disrespected constitutional duties, while the Tamil Nadu government defended its protocol of playing the state anthem, Tamil Thai Vazhthu, at the beginning and the national anthem at the end of proceedings. This incident highlights varied practices across states and the constitutional mandate to respect the national anthem. The controversy reflects ongoing tensions over procedural norms and interpretations of respect for national and state symbols in legislative settings.
