New Jumping Spider Species Discovered in Tamil Nadu
A new species of jumping spider, Carrhotus piperus, was discovered in the lower Palani Hills of Tamil Nadu, India. The species, named after the black pepper (Piper nigrum) plants it lives on, adds to the rich biodiversity of the region, increasing India’s Carrhotus species count to 10. This discovery, led by John Caleb T.D. and M. Sampathkumar, emphasizes the importance of continued biodiversity research and understanding plant-animal relationships. Jumping spiders, known for their excellent vision and leaping ability, actively hunt rather than spin webs, and are found worldwide except Antarctica.
