One in Three Children Affected by Myopia Surge

A recent global study shows that one in three children now has myopia (short-sightedness), with a significant rise linked to increased screen time and reduced outdoor activity during the COVID-19 pandemic. Myopia cases have tripled since 1990, with 85% of children in Japan and 73% in South Korea affected. In contrast, some countries like Paraguay and Uganda have much lower rates. Experts recommend children spend at least two hours outdoors daily to prevent myopia, which often begins in childhood and can worsen until age 20. Treatments include glasses, contact lenses, and new therapies like orthokeratology.
