Polar Vortex and Winter Storms

The polar vortex, a mass of cold air from the Arctic, has expanded southward, causing severe winter storms in the United States. Affecting over 60 million people, temperatures are expected to drop as low as -50°C. The vortex, spinning at wind speeds of 155 mph, plays a critical role in global atmospheric circulation. Weakening of the vortex, often linked to climate change, allows frigid winds to reach mid-latitudes. Historical events like the 2013-14 vortex disrupted weather patterns, freezing 92.5% of the Great Lakes. Researchers note the increasing influence of climate change on vortex stability, intensifying extreme weather events globally.
